Piano tab notation will help you learn melodies without knowing sheet music. In this piano lesson you will learn to read easy piano tabs. You will also learn to play Happy Birthday To You!

If you do not know how to read piano sheet music I suggest that you try to learn it. If you start with very easy melodies with just a few notes you will not get too frustrated. Learn the names of the keys of your piano. Also, learn the names of the notes as they appear on an easy music sheet, focusing on just a few at a time.

To read sheet music well you have to have the patience and devote time to practicing. This practice time will pay off as you will have an immense amount of sheet music waiting to be played. Until you have mastered the art of playing sheet music you can use piano tabs to help you play melodies.

With the help of piano tablature you can easily learn melodies, chords and other music on your piano. Tabs cannot replace sheet music but you can notate much musical information even with this type of notation.

What is piano tablature?

Piano tab notation is an established system for reading and writing music. Actually there are several systems, some with numbers and others with letters but we will use a simplified form of the most common system on the net.

Sheet music notation shows the actual notes to play but not how to play them on your piano. This task you have to perform yourself. Piano tablature on the other hand is a way of showing which keys to play on your piano. When you have learned the system you will find it easy to play melodies. But, first you have to learn the note names.

The note names

We will use the note names on the piano as the basis for the notation. You will have to learn the names of the notes on the white keys of your piano. The first note we will learn is the middle c. It is easy to understand that the middle c is at the middle of the piano but exactly where?

You have probably noticed that the black keys on your piano or keyboard are organized in groups. You will find groups with two and with three black keys all over the keyboard.

If you take a look at the two black keys at the middle of your piano you will find middle c immediately to the left of these black keys. This middle c is sometimes called c4. The number 4 shows that it is the c in the fourth octave.

What is an octave?

Octave means eight and if you play the note c and the following notes until you come to the next c you have played eight notes. This c note is to the left of the next two black keys one octave higher.

The notes after middle c are d e f g a b and then comes c again. When you play these notes from c to the next c you have played a c-major scale. The next c is sometimes called c5 as it is in the next octave which is the fifth octave of a piano keyboard. The c in the octave to the left of middle c is called c3.

Now we will take a closer look at the piano tablature we will use in the song Happy Birthday To You.

The rules

In this article we will use a simplified version of the piano tabs you will find on the Internet. Here are the rules:

1. Lowercase letters show the white keys. That is, c d e f g a b.

2. Uppercase letters show the black keys. The note C means that you shall play the black key to the right of c. This note is written as c# in traditional sheet music language.

3. A number after a note name shows in which octave to play the note. The note c4 means middle c. The following notes to play will not have a number until you change octave.

I know classical piano players who are very good at reading sheet music. I also know pianists that has a tremendous ability to play by ear. How can you become a classical pianist having a good ear and the ability to play chords and improvising?

I have many times seen that pianists that can read sheet music and sightread very well feel uncomfortable when they are asked to accompany a singer without the aid of sheet music notation.

Personally I have been asked many times to play piano to singers who wants to sing in another key then the one in the sheet music available. This happens because I have developed my ability to play by ear and to change keys on the go.

Of course, someone could transpose the music to a lower key and write it down in order to play sheet music but it is much work involved and often you will not have time to write the music down.

If you are playing popular music it can actually be an advantage to play by ear to get into the right mood and play more musically.

But all this presupposes that you have the ability to play piano by ear and that you can play various styles of music.

I know of some piano players who can’t play a note of sheet music. I guess they have earlier in their life been scared off by sheet music notation or maybe they have seen some pianists playing with accuracy but too mechanically for their taste. Maybe they just think that it is too much hard work involved!

I think that there are some misconceptions pertaining to playing by ear and playing sheet music. Some people think that sightreading pianists have to be bad at playing by ear and that improvising pianists need to be poor sight readers.

Well, the truth is that you will be good at what you practice. If you practice both sightreading and chord playing you will become better and better in these areas.

If you are a classical pianist with the ambition to be able to play by ear you can develop this ability as you practice your repertoire and learn new sheet music. Here are some suggestions:

1. Develop your ability to understand chord theory. This can be done as you practice a piece of sheet music. In classical piano pieces you will find passages with chords that you can investigate and learn a lot from. In the first bars of Fur Elise for example you will find the chords Am and E-major. As you play this piece you will find a lot of common chords intervowen in the music.

To spot chords and scales as you practice a piece of classical music will help you put more intellectual power into the enterprise and will also help you memorize the music better.

2. Learn licks from your piano pieces. When you find passages in the music you play that you like and want to incorporate in your repertoire of licks and phrases to use you can memorize them and play around with them trying to improvise, changing notes here and there and transposing them. 3. Playing scales. Play around with the notes, try to create interesting melodies and small licks and using chords as you play. This will help you practice both your finger dexterity and musical abilities.

There are many more things you can do to develope your ear and your sense for chords and improvisation. The important thing is to see possibilities in the classical piano sheet music you play.

How can you use a fake book to become a better pianist? A fake book includes a lot of melodies due to the concise format. Let us use a fake book to make you a better chord player!

There are many things you can do with just one song in a fake book. In this piano lesson we will focus on the chords of a song and how we can use them in a piano practice session.

You can learn to play piano chords in many different ways. Here are just a few examples:

1. You can focus on just one chord memorizing it in twelve keys and then learning another chord the same way. This way of learning chords can be effective if you concentrate long enough on the chords committing them to your long term memory. Some people find this way of learning to mechanical and boring.

2. You can work on learning chord progressions by heart an then applying them in all twelve keys. You can find such chord voicings in piano method books or you can “invent” you own progressions and voicings. Maybe this approach is a little bit more interesting than the before mentioned method.
