One of the best ways to practice the guitar is through the use of a guitar tablature or the guitar sheet music.

Guitar tablatures are the most effective guide in learning and playing the guitar. Today people can find variety of resources from books and especially the World Wide Web. Reading the guitar music requires patience and knowledge, and with practice you can strum along to your favorite song without hassle.

Guitar sheet music or tablatures are easy to understand and read once you’ve known the basics.

First you need to know its parts and purposes. Some guitar tablatures also include the musical staff, which indicates the notes and the tempo timing of the song, but it is mostly for advance musicians who can read notes. Beginners should start by learning to read the tablature sheet.

The guitar sheet music is made up of 6 lines, which act as the guitar strings. The upper line is the high pitch E string while the lowest is the bass E string. There are numbers written on the line, which indicates the finger positions on the fret bar. Also you can find letters on the tab like “p” which means pull (the pulling of fingers from the strings) and “h” for hammer (hammering the string with fingers). The strumming patterns though indicated with a symbol would be learned easily if you play along with the song.

You can find guitar sheet music of your favorite songs from music books and websites that offer free tablatures submitted by fellow musicians. There is also computer software, which shows you not only the tablature but plays it as well together with sound for easy learning.

There are lots of effective ways of learning the guitar and learning how to read guitar music is a good thing to learn and practice.

Learning the guitar requires a lot of skills and dedication to excel and guitar sheet music is indeed the best help for learning the instrument. It will require a lot of time and effort but once you get used to it, you’ll see that you can play any song as long as there’s a tablature to read.

Some people say that using guitar tablatures is the same as cheating, but most people and musicians who also devote time writing sheet music thinks that it’s just to speed things up for beginning musicians.

Some may not be a fan. Some may prefer learning by ear, but for beginners and for those who want to save themselves from the hassle of learning the song by listening to it over and over, reading guitar sheet music is a shortcut.

Using tablatures is not bad but if you want to excel further you might as well teach yourself music theories and practice learning by ear. After all, guitar tablature is one of the many methods to practice and learn guitar. It is also a great help to satisfy yourself when you’re playing a song you have always wanted to play.

Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to play the hit songs you hear on the radio and be able to play them on your guitar even without tabs or sheet music!

In this guitar lesson we will use Every Breath You Take as an example.

The hits songs you hear are usually copyright protected and shouldn’t be found as free sheet music on the internet and really not as guitar tab either without permission from the copyright owner.

However I can tell you that I personally have saved a lot of money by my ability to play songs I hear by ear. I don’t have to buy sheet music and I can also play them as they are heard on the radio or make a guitar solo version of them.

To be able to play songs on your guitar by ear you have to develop your ear and your ability to find yourself around on the guitar fretboard.

In this guitar lesson I will show you how to play “Every Breath You Take” in the key of G. This means that you cannot play together with the original version by Police and Sting but I think it will be easier to play the melody on your guitar in this key.

Guitar lesson part 1

The verse begins with the words “Every breath you take”

The chords on your guitar will be:

G Em C D G

The melody notes you will need in order to play this song will be:

G A B C D

A very economic melody as far as melody notes are concerned. But how do you play these notes on your guitar?

I will show you these notes with a form of guitar tablature that will be displayed correctly on article sites like this one. Some examples:

23 means that you press down the second fret on the third string.

03 means that you play the third open string. This means that you play the third string with you right hand without pressing down a fret.

In other words, the first number indicate which fret to press down and the second number which string.

Guitar lesson part 2

Let’s go back to the melody notes you’ll need for the first verse:

G A B C D

With the previosly explained guitar tablature the notes will look like this:

03 23 02 12 32

I will not show you the melody. You are supposed to learn to find this out by yourself. I will only help you by saying that the first note to play is B and is notated 02.

Guitar lesson part 3

Let’s take a look at the part of the song beginning with the words “Oh, can’t you see”

The chords will be (a bit simplified):

C G A D

This part starts with the note G notated 03.

The notes you will need to use are:

G B D E F# G A

and they are notated like this:

03 02 32 01 21 31 51

This melody starts with the note G notated 03.

I will not help you more that this in this guitar lesson. The best way to learn the melody is by trial and error.

In the process of learning this melody you will also develop your ear and your ability to find your way around on your guitar.

This means that the next melody you will try to learn will probably be easier to learn!

You can prepare yourself to pick up melodies on your guitar by doing these two exercises:

1. Learn scales on your guitar. Learn to play the scales up and down.

2. When you know a scale well you can improvise simple melodies and play around with the scale and at the same time you will learn to find your way around the guitar.

The more you learn scales and create your own melodies on your guitar the easier you will have to figure out how a certain melody can be played on your guitar.

Stepping forward on our way to mastering the skills for reading tabs and playing easy guitar lessons for beginners, here is the second exercise of a planned series of simple and easy, though very nice and useful, beginner guitar exercises.

It aims to keep developing your fretting and plucking skills, as well as helping you grow your musical appreciation.

Here is the second exercise of a series of simple and easy, though very nice and useful, reading and playing exercises I teach to my beginner guitar students. They love it. It aims to keep developing your fretting and plucking skills, as well as helping you grow your musical appreciation.

As every exercise or study has, this one has also its own goals, requirements and particularities.

So, what are the goals of this first exercise?

Besides growing flexibility of both hands fingers and independence between left and right hands, it will help you to keep notes sounding during all their required lengths, expanding your discerning ability for quality music playing.

You will need not to forget the name conventions we stated in Exercise 1.

Now, here’s the exercise!

Now, what does the tab mean?

Let’s go to the first bar.

You will play it this way:

- First pluck the open 5th string with the thumb finger of your right hand.

- Then the 2nd string, fretted at the 2nd fret, plucked with the index finger of your right hand.

- Then the 2nd string, fretted at the 3rd fret, plucked with the middle finger of your right hand.

- And then the open 1st string, plucked with the index finger of your right hand.

Now you will play the second bar, and the the rest of them, remembering that you will use fingers 1, 2 3 and 4 of your left hand to fret strings in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th frets, correspondingly, excepto for the 5th bar, where you will use fingers 1, 3 and 4 to fret the 1st string in 2nd, 4th and 5th frets.

At 8th bar, you will play together (at the same time), the 5th string open and the 3rd string pressed at the 2nd fret with your finger 2.

You will play all notes on the 6th, 5th and 4th strings with you right hand thumb finger, and all notes on the 3rd, 2nd and 1st strings with your right hand index and middle fingers alternately.

As usual, Keep trying until you get:

- A clean sound every time you pluck a string .

- A not interrupted duration of each played note.

- A continuous playing, not delaying from one bar to he next.
