Stepping forward on our way to mastering the skills for reading tabs and playing easy guitar lessons for beginners, here is the second exercise of a planned series of simple and easy, though very nice and useful, beginner guitar exercises.

It aims to keep developing your fretting and plucking skills, as well as helping you grow your musical appreciation.

Here is the second exercise of a series of simple and easy, though very nice and useful, reading and playing exercises I teach to my beginner guitar students. They love it. It aims to keep developing your fretting and plucking skills, as well as helping you grow your musical appreciation.

As every exercise or study has, this one has also its own goals, requirements and particularities.

So, what are the goals of this first exercise?

Besides growing flexibility of both hands fingers and independence between left and right hands, it will help you to keep notes sounding during all their required lengths, expanding your discerning ability for quality music playing.

You will need not to forget the name conventions we stated in Exercise 1.

Now, here’s the exercise!

It will be most useful to you to download a free music score and a free midi file (which you can listen to) of this exercise, from the Beginner’s Guitar Website (http://www.beginners-guitar.com.

Now, what does the tab mean?

Let’s go to the first bar.

You will play it this way:

- First pluck the open 5th string with the thumb finger of your right hand.

- Then the 2nd string, fretted at the 2nd fret, plucked with the index finger of your right hand.

- Then the 2nd string, fretted at the 3rd fret, plucked with the middle finger of your right hand.

- And then the open 1st string, plucked with the index finger of your right hand.

Now you will play the second bar, and the the rest of them, remembering that you will use fingers 1, 2 3 and 4 of your left hand to fret strings in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th frets, correspondingly, excepto for the 5th bar, where you will use fingers 1, 3 and 4 to fret the 1st string in 2nd, 4th and 5th frets.

At 8th bar, you will play together (at the same time), the 5th string open and the 3rd string pressed at the 2nd fret with your finger 2.

You will play all notes on the 6th, 5th and 4th strings with you right hand thumb finger, and all notes on the 3rd, 2nd and 1st strings with your right hand index and middle fingers alternately.

As usual, Keep trying until you get:

- A clean sound every time you pluck a string .

- A not interrupted duration of each played note.

- A continuous playing, not delaying from one bar to he next.

This is the first easy reading and playing exercise I teach my guitar beginner students.

It is a very simple, though very nice and helpful exercise. You will develop your fretting and plucking skills. And you will develop your musical taste and musical appreciation too. All my students love it.

Every exercise or study has its own goals, requirements and particularities.

So, what are the goals of this first one?

To mention just a few, among many others:

- To grow flexibility of both hands fingers.

- To evolve independence between left and right hand fingers.

- To create the ability to bring quality sound out of your guitar.

- To improve your aptitudes for reading tablatures or music scores.

- To expand your discerning ability for quality music playing.

So we can understand each other, we’ll state some name conventions.

From now on, your left hand fingers will be referred as:

Index finger = 1

Middle finger = 2

Ring finger = 3

Small finger = 4

And your right hand fingers will be referred as:

Thumb finer = p

Index finger = i

Middle finger = m

Ring finger = a

Now, let’s go to exercise!

Does it seem to have too many figures, letters and lines?

No! Not at all!

Now, what does all that means?

Let’s start with the first bar.

You will press the 3rd string at the 2nd fret with the middle finger of your left hand, and, at the same time, you will also press de 2nd string at the 1st fret with the index finger of your left hand.

Now, with your left hand position set, you will:

- First pluck the open 5th string with the thumb finger of your right hand

- Then the 3rd string with the index finger of your right hand

- Then the 2nd string with the middle finger of your right hand

- And then the 1st string with the ring finger of your right hand.

Then you will proceed with the second bar, fretting the 3rd string at the 1st fret with your finger 1.

For 7th and 8th bars, you will need to fret the 3rd string at the 1st fret with your finger 1 and the 2nd string at the 3rd fret with your finger 3 (or 4).

At 9th bar, you will play together (at the same time), the 5th string open and the 3rd string pressed at the 2nd fret with your finger 2.

Wwhen you press a string with a finger of your left hand, that finger should not touch another string, as then that string will not sound correctly if plucked.

Remember to pluck strings with your right hand fingers and to press strings with your left hand fingers with the necessary strength to get a clean sound.

Keep trying until you get:

- A clean sound each time you pluck a string

- A continuous playing, without delaying from one bar to he next

Now, come on! Go try it!

Adult piano lessons! Not sure if you should be going ahead with or not? I think it is perfectly alright if you have doubts in your mind. As adults, we become so engrossed in our day to day life that it hardly leaves us with any time to learn something new. That is the reason we have to think so hard to take that decision, since it means committing your precious time. To accommodate time for your new hobby and that too for a few months would definitely make you sit up and think about it.  

At the same time you also need to realize that if you cannot get time for it now, you will never get time for it, and you will miss out an opportunity to play the piano. So definitely give it a thought, and after giving it a lot of thought, if you still are not able to completely remove this idea from your mind, then may be you should just give it a try… and not worry too much about the results. After all, learning the piano is something you always wanted to do. The good thing now is that you don’t even have to ask for money from your parents -:)    

Knowing Yourself

As an adult, you need to know yourself so that you can choose the correct approach to learning the piano. Adults learn differently from kids so plan accordingly. Adults also need lot more flexibility, just because they have so many other commitments. If you are talking lessons from a personal teacher, you may need lessons late in the evening or over the weekends so make it clear to your teacher. 

Method Books

If you are one of those who do not want to learn from the teacher, you can try one of the several method books that are available. Almost all these books have accompanying CDs that can be used as part of the lessons. Some of the popular publishers of adult piano courses include the Alfred’s Method and Piano Adventures Method by Fabers. Piano for Dummies is another good book which can also be used to learn the piano. 

Piano Software

Another good way is to buy Piano software, which will help you to learn the piano on your computer. If you have a digital piano, it can be connected to your computer. If not, look for packages that come with a midi-keyboard (3-5 octaves). Connecting these keyboards to the computer can be of great help since the software can then actually tell you what notes you have played wrongly.  

So as you can see, there are plenty of opportunities for you to learn the piano. Just pick up whatever you are comfortable with!
